Magnum Opus is the successor to the programs The Daily Crossword (a PC-DOS program current from 1992 to 1994) and
Crossword Express (a program with versions for Windows and Apple Macintosh, current from 1994 to 2009).
It has a wide range of features which allow you create (both manually and automatically) a wide range of puzzles which initially include Acrostic, Domino, Doublet, Futoshiki, Kakuro, Kendoku, Ladderword, Letterdrop, Pyramidword, Slitherlink, Sudoku, and naturally Crosswords, both Standard and Freeform.
Additional puzzle types similar to these will be added in future releases.

The program is written in the popular Java language which results in two significant advantages:-
- The executable program is distributed as MagnumOpus.jar Such files (having a .jar extension) are distinguished by the fact that they will run on any computer which
has a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed. Consequently it will run equally well on Windows and Macintosh (and of course on Linux and Solaris).
- Java uses Unicode to represent characters, so the program automatically caters for the character set of virtually every language used in the world today. No need to specify the character set you want to use...Magnum Opus will take care of all such issues without user intervention.
